The New Year is a new beginning, a renewal of the calendar and for many people, a renewed sense of objectivity in which to pursue our goals. It’s no different for me, though I refuse to say I have any resolutions, because resolutions are laughably meant to be broken. Instead, I’m going to dig in, and complete, the goals I set several months ago. I have a space opera series needing completion, and I have a collaboration to knock out with a writer friend. How in the hell am I supposed to write and publish twelve books in the next twelve months? Not by breaking a half-hearted resolution, that much I can tell you.
At this moment, January 1, 2018, the fourth Alorian Wars book is with my editor. After she knocks out her edits, I’ll make the necessary corrections, send a few copies out to betas while it is with my formatter, and it will be published by month’s end. In the meantime, I just wrote the first chapter of the fifth book in the series and I need to have it completed by the end of January to stay on track. Needless to say, I’m going to be busy as shit keeping up, but I’m excited to see this series through to completion.
What about the collaborations? Well, those will be more difficult to manage since it isn’t all on me. My coauthor will depend on me to do my part just as I will need to depend on him for his. Having never done a project like this before, it’s going to be a learning experience. The great thing is both of us are enthusiastic about building this project together. Enthusiasm is the tool that gets shit done when you’ve nothing else to use. So, we are putting our faith in perseverance and we shall see this thing through.
I think it’s fitting to try new things with a new year. As I roll into my sixth year as a published author, I intend to grow my base and develop my business into one I can use to support my family after I retire from the Navy. Is it ambitious? Yes, but so is writing a book in the first place. Ambition is nothing more than an act of defiance against the inner voice that tells you that you can’t do something. I haven’t listened to that voice in a long time. 2018 will be no different.
So, here’s to a new year and new objectives. Let’s get it done.
